The Livestock Resilience and Competitiveness Project is a project of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal and Fisheries Resources of Burkina Faso with a view to boosting the livestock sector in Burkina Faso.
Indeed, the agro-sylvo-pastoral sector occupies a little more than 63% of the active population and constitutes the main source of income in rural areas. The livestock subsector constitutes the third pillar of the national economy after the mining sector and agriculture.
However, a wide range of constraints still limit its development. These include:
- (i) weak political, institutional and technical support for the sub-sector
- (ii) low species productivity
- (iii) low competitiveness due to the weakness of supporting equipment and infrastructure and difficulties in accessing financing
- (iv) land insecurity and farmer/herder conflicts; (v) gender inequalities; etc.
Faced with this situation, several challenges remain regarding improving the competitiveness and resilience of the livestock subsector, particularly in sedentary systems.
This is why the Burkinabè Government, with the support of the World Bank, developed the Livestock Resilience and Competitiveness Project (PRECEL). The Project is put into effect on December 18, 2023 and the closing date is set for December 31, 2029. The official launch of PRECEL activities took place on February 23, 2024 in Banankélédaga in the Hauts-Bassins region.
The overall cost of the project is US$195,048,000, or approximately 120,598,617,000 CFA francs, broken down as follows:
- World Bank: 150,000,000 US Dollars or 92,745,451,000 CFA F
- State: 8,225,000 US Dollars or 5,085,431,000 F CFA
- Beneficiaries: 14,823,000 US Dollars or 9,165,094,000 CFA F
- IFP: 22,000,000 US Dollars or 13,602,641,000 CFA F
